Great Lakes History

Bringing the past to life in books and presentations.

John C. Mitchell, award-winning author and historian was the 2011 winner of a State History award. His titles include Grand Traverse: The Civil War Era, and Wood Boats of Leelanau: A Photographic Journal as well as a series of books for children done in collaboration with illustrator Tom Woodruff: Michigan: An Illustrated History for Children, Prehistoric Great Lakes: An Illustrated History for Children, Indians of the Great Lakes: An Illustrated History for Children and Great Lakes and Great Ships: An Illustrated History for Children.

 

Leelanau Township Community Foundation

The Leelanau Township Community Foundation’s history is rich with stories of how the foundation’s efforts have made Northport, Omena and the surrounding countryside a better place to live. Since 1945 the LTCF has given over two million dollars in grants to the community in ways that change lives. While their philanthropic efforts are tightly woven in the history of this area, they also very involved in the future.
